Black Heart Shape

This three-story staircase was designed and built entirely by hand, with treads milled from solid oak and railings crafted from solid black walnut across all three floors using traditional joinery techniques. Every railing surface was given a specialized Japanese hand plane finish, a process that removes material at a microscopic level, leaving wood smoother than any sandpaper can achieve.

The floating design sits lightly within the home's mid-century modern interior, giving the heavy wood an unexpected lightness, and drawing more natural light into what is, by any measure, the centerpiece of the home.
